The Bobbing Forest is an idea of artist Jorge Bakker (Columbia, 1973), who lives and works in the Netherlands. His work is characterized by the sculptures and installations with an achitectonic twist, and often contain elements like water and wind. His installation 'In Search Of Habitus' exists of an water-filled aquarium with bobbers containing scalemodel trees. These bobbers float over the watersurface, hereby raising questions about the relation between human, city and nature and how these relate to each other.
Jeroen Everaert (art producer Mothership and Brotherhood), Anne van der Zwaag (art historian and cultural entrepeneur) and Jurgen Bey (Dutch designer) raised the idea to realize the concept of Jorge Bakker in life-size.
During the coming years the Rijnhaven in Rotterdam provides space to exemplar projects of floating architecture. The Bobbing Forest is recently selected as one of the temporary city initiatives. Other selected initiatives are for example a floating hockeyfield, a floating glass house and beach, a boat hosting a swimming pool and a wakeboardtrack. All these initiatives are supplementary to the current functions in and around the Rijnhaven. The steering Committee of Stadhavens Rotterdam selected these initiatives to stimulate the vividness of the relatively unused area of Rotterdam Zuid. The projects fungate as a forerunner of possible new funcitions of the area.
The Bobbing Forest will be mainly made out of reused materials. Twenty old seabuoys from the Northsea are offered by Rijkswaterstaat, the ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. These seabuoys will be prepared to host living trees and make them able to flourish. The trees in turn are donated by the Bomendepot, which is the treestorage of the muncipality of Rotterdam. These trees used to be destroyed when removed from their original spot. Nowadays when trees are (temporarily) removed from their site, they are stored at the Bomendepot untill there is a new destination for them.
To make the production of the Bobbing Forest possible we collaborate with as much partners as possible. These cooperations stimulate the arise of innovative solutions. Current knowledge of the workfield is combined with the fresh view of the students. Students of the RDM Campus of the Rotterdam University are looking for possibilities of how to keep the trees in equilibrium while floating. Since the freshwatertrees will be positioned in brakkish water, the nourishing of the trees is another aspect that requires an original solution. This is the challenging task of some students of the University of Applied Sciences Van Hall Larenstein.
Brotherhood Art Foundation is een stichting, in het leven geroepen door Mothership, met het doel om Kunst dichter bij de mens te brengen. Het zijn bijzondere, in het oog springende projecten in de buitenruimte die een brede groep mensen zal interesseren om meer van kunst te willen weten. Het zijn projecten die zo bijzonder zijn dat deze omarmd worden door vele partijen.
Dobberend Bos is een project dat alles in zich heeft qua innovatieve architectuur, recycling, duurzaamheid en het streven naar een groenere stad.
Het initiatief voor de realisatie van Dobberend bos is afkomstig van Stichting Brotherhood. Kunstproducent Mothership zal het project van begin tot eind begeleiden en produceren.

Een dobberend bos en Progressive Global Energy? Op het eerste oog een opvallende combinatie. Tijdens een Clean Drinks bijeenkomst (een initiatief om jonge, creatieve ondernemers te laten discussiëren over duurzaam ondernemen) ontmoetten wij Jeroen Everaert. Jeroen gaf een presentatie met een enthousiast verhaal over zijn organisatie the Mothership en het aankomende project ‘Het Dobberend Bos’ naar een idee van kunstenaar Jorge Bakker.
Een geweldig project waar wij graag een toegevoegde waarde aan wilden en willen leveren. Waarom? Een uniek project op een pracht locatie met een duurzaam karakter. Een project dat de Green X-factor heeft en daarmee ook de green gun factor. Juist deze gun factor is de reden dat wij als Progressive Global Energy ons verbonden hebben aan dit project , omdat wij als geen ander weten hoe belangrijk deze gun factor is. Als bemiddelaar in de maritiem/offshore (wind)energie zijn wij actief in een markt waar duurzaamheid een steeds grotere rol speelt bij onze opdrachtgevers.
Daarnaast zien wij een sterke connectie in het duurzame karakter van dit initiatief en het opbouwen van duurzame relaties met onze opdrachtgevers.
